Guatemala is a firm favourite on the Central American backpacking trail. With amazing attractions such as the Acatanango Volcano Hike and the famous Semuc Champey waterfalls, it’s no surprise that the country attracts over two million visitors each year.

If you’re heading to Guatemala, the iconic city of Antigua is a must-visit, and you’ll be happy to know that getting there from the capital is extremely easy!

Here are your different travel options between Guatemala City and Antigua, including the local bus, shared shuttles, and hiring a private driver.

Shared Shuttle from Guatemala City to Antigua

If you’re travelling alone, this is definitely the option I would recommend. Although shuttles are undoubtedly more expensive than local buses, they are safe, reliable and efficient.

You can pre-book your shuttles through GuateGo, which costs between $15 and $20 USD, depending on the time of day you travel. These shuttles provide a door-to-door service, dropping you off directly at your accommodation.

Local Bus From Guatemala City to Antigua

Colloquially known as ‘chicken buses,’ Guatemala’s public transport system consists of bright, colourful (often yellow) buses. They are known for being a little chaotic, to say the least.

I would not recommend taking the public bus system in Guatemala with all of your belongings, even if your Spanish is amazing. While these buses are fantastic for day trips, they are probably not the safest or most convenient option.

I haven’t ever taken the public bus between Guatemala City and Antigua, so I will instead link Along Dusty Road’s instructions here

By Private Driver

This is the option I chose, and if there is more than one of you, I would seriously reccomend it. We paid $30 USD for a direct transfer from the airport to our Airbnb. We booked this through our Airbnb, and I would recommend using your accommodation to help you book this, as it will undoubtedly be cheaper than doing it directly.

The drive takes around an hour and a half and is extremely beautiful. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the views.

Take a Taxi From the Airport

Of course, you can use a regular taxi or Uber from the airport, but to be honest, I wouldn’t recommend this.

Regular taxi prices are notoriously unreliable, and unless your Spanish is perfect, you may struggle with the negotiation process.

Whilst you might get lucky and grab an Uber at a reasonable rate, it makes more sense to arrange the driver beforehand. This way, you will know everything is in order for when you land, and there is no waiting around.

Renting a Car From Guatemala City to Antigua

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend renting a car in Guatemala unless your Spanish skills are excellent and your driving skills are even better.

My Spanish teacher warned me of the dangers of the roads in Guatemala and remarked on the many, many accidents that happen each week. These are often extremely serious, involving motorcycles.

Is it Worth Staying in Guatemala City?

Guatemala City only has a few tourist attractions and a somewhat dangerous reputation. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend it as a place to visit on your Guatemala itinerary.

However, I did stay here for one night (to facilitate an early morning flight) and felt very comfortable and safe. We used Ubers rather than wandering around and didn’t stay out too late.
