Arequipa is a charming city in the south of Peru with a population of just over one million. It sits at an altitude of 2300 meters and is a popular stop for all travellers exploring Peru.
It’s filled with pretty streets, glistening white buildings, and incredible, well-priced places to eat—it’s no surprise this is such a popular tourist hotspot.
So, from seeing the incredible Andean Condors at the Colca Canyon to sampling the famous queso helado, here are the best things to do in Arequipa, Peru.
All The Best Things to Do in Arequipa, Peru
Visit the Colca Canyon
Colca Canyon is one of the world’s deepest canyons and is undoubtedly the best thing to do in Arequipa, Peru. In fact, it’s the whole reason we added Arequipa to our Peru Itinerary.
It’s twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, offering breathtaking views and the chance to spot the majestic Andean Condors. The journey to the canyon is an adventure in itself, with scenic landscapes and charming villages dotted along the way.
I was absolutely blown away by the number of Andean Condors we saw at the Colca Canyon. Although impossible to count accurately, I estimate that there were around twenty flying overhead, putting on a real show. I wouldn’t have classed myself as much of a bird enthusiast before, but maybe this trip to Arequipa changed my view!
Top Tip: If you plan a stop in Puno on Lake Titicaca, you can book a day trip to Colca Canyon that finishes the day in Puno rather than returning to Arequipa. It’s an extremely long day, but it’s well worth it to get the most out of a travel day.
Enjoy the Plaza
As with almost all Latin American cities, the Plaza de Armas is the beating heart of Arequipa.
It’s lively, beautiful, and always full of energy. Surrounded by stunning colonial architecture, including the majestic cathedral, the plaza is perfect for soaking up the local vibe. Grab a seat on one of the benches and watch the world go by, or take a leisurely stroll around the square.
In the evenings, the plaza comes alive with lights, music, and the buzz of people enjoying the cool night air. It’s the perfect spot for people-watching and snapping some memorable photos.
I saw one of the most unique and fun afternoons ever at the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa. There was a skateboard meetup, with approximately two hundred skateboarders showing off their skills. Simultaneously, there was a traditional wedding, with the gorgeous couple taking photographs in the plaza. The two joined forces and created some of the most fun, unique wedding images I think Peru has ever seen! So much fun!
Explore the Ruta Del Sillar
The Ruta del Sillar is an adventure through history and nature. When starting your Arequipa research, you will undoubtedly see the iconic pictures.
This unique route takes you to the quarries where the famous white volcanic stone, sillar, is extracted. As you wander, you’ll see intricate carvings and learn how this stone shaped Arequipa’s identity.
I have to be honest: The quarry didn’t blow me away. It felt very inauthentic and a little boring. However, your next stop on the tour is Quebrada de Culebrillas, a breathtaking natural canyon carved by centuries of water erosion. It features dramatic rock formations, ancient petroglyphs, and stunning landscapes in the Andean highlands.
The hike at Quebrada de Culebrillas takes around one hour and is a little challenging in spots, so I recommend wearing hiking boots if you have them available.
Saint Catherine Monastery (Monasterio de Santa Catalina)
The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is like a city within a city. This vast, colourful monastery is a fascinating glimpse into Arequipa’s past. Wandering through its narrow streets and brightly painted courtyards, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
There is a QR code at the entrance that allows you to download an online guide. If you’re not taking a tour, I 100% recommend downloading this (it’s completely free). Here, you will find an interactive map that gives you details of every room you visit, providing context and interesting facts about the monastery.
Each corner reveals something new—a hidden chapel, a tranquil garden, or a room filled with centuries-old relics. The monastery was once home to hundreds of nuns, and its history is as intriguing as its architecture. It’s a peaceful, beautiful place to spend a few hours, full of photo opportunities.
The monastery is open to visitors Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the last entry at 5 p.m. Tickets cost S/ 45 and can be purchased online in advance or on the door using cash or card.
Drink Excellent Coffee
South America is a paradise for coffee lovers! Before I landed in South America, I didn’t view coffee as much more than something to wake me up or have a good gossip over – but wow, my opinion has changed now!
Arequipa boasts some of the best coffee in Peru, with beans often sourced from local highlands farms (Yes, its even good enough to rival the famous Colombian beans!). I swear, each cup is brewed to perfection, whether that’s a strong espresso or a smooth latte.
The cafés here are cosy and inviting, perfect for a leisurely break. Pair your coffee with a sweet treat, like an alfajor (my absolute favourite coffee snack), and you have the perfect afternoon indulgence.
Many cafés offer outdoor seating, so you can sip your coffee while soaking in the beautiful views of Arequipa’s streets and plazas.
Sample Queso Helado
No visit to Arequipa is complete without trying queso helado, a local speciality that’s as delicious as it is unique.
Thankfully, despite its name, this treat has nothing to do with cheese. It’s a creamy, cinnamon-spiced ice cream made from milk, coconut, and sometimes a splash of pisco.
Vendors are selling it all over the city, especially in the Plaza de Armas. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a warm day while enjoying Arequipa’s culinary traditions.
Yanahuara
Yanahuara is one of Arequipa’s most charming neighbourhoods, and it’s just a short walk from the city centre. The beautiful Yanahuara Plaza, with its traditional Spanish-style arches, is the main attraction here. These arches frame stunning views of El Misti, the towering volcano that watches over Arequipa.
Stroll around the peaceful streets, explore the little shops, and don’t miss the lovely church of San Juan Bautista. Yanahuara is also home to some delightful cafés where you can relax with a coffee and enjoy the quiet charm of this area.
A Note on Altitude in Arequipa
Arequipa sits at around 2300 meters above sea level. If you’re not used to being at altitude, you might experience side effects such as shortness of breath, dizziness or tiredness.
You can buy altitude medication in every pharmacy around the city – and be sure to take it slow and keep yourself hydrated.
Although you might experience discomfort for a few days, it’s the perfect way to acclimatize before travelling to Cusco.
