Nestled at the foot of the Andes, Mendoza is a paradise for adventure seekers, wine lovers, and anyone in search of breathtaking landscapes.
Known as Argentina’s wine capital, this charming city offers more than just world-class Malbec. It’s a destination where nature, gastronomy, and culture collide in the most epic way possible.
Mendoza was my first taste of Argentina, after passing over the border via bus from Santiago, Chile. (One of the most epic drives in the whole of South America). And it’s safe to say, it didn’t disappoint. Mendoza is an incredible city with lots to do and a fun, vibrant atmosphere.
I recommend dedicating at least four days to Mendoza, which will allow you to enjoy the best of what this fantastic city has to offer!

8 Epic Things to Do in Mendoza, Argentina
Visit the Five Plazas
If you’re familiar with South American cities, you will know that they are often built around tranquil central plazas. These become the places for locals and tourists to hang out, and the home of community events and gatherings.
Well, Mendoza is no exception. Plaza Independencia is the main square in the city, and of course, everyone’s favourite. It’s clean, very pretty, and has an interesting large water fountain. Every night at 8 p.m. there is a free light show which I seriously recommend checking out!
But, what makes Mendoza so special is that it also has four smaller, but equally as beautiful squares sitting at each corner of Plaza Independencia.
These are Plaza Chile, Plaza Espana, Plaza San Martin and Plaza Italia. They are all worth a visit, and you can comfortably walk around the four in an hour.
My personal favourite is Plaza Italia as it has a stunning fountain in the middle and was often a little quieter than the others. Plaza Espana was often filled with people practicing dancing, which was great fun to watch!

Explore Parque San Martin
Right in the heart of Mendoza is Parque San Martin. It’s a picturesque green escape from the buzz of the city. This sprawling park feels a world away from the bustling heart of Mendoza.
You don’t need to take a taxi here, you can walk from the central plaza in around thirty minutes – down a wonderful street packed with plenty of cute cafes and excellent coffee shops.
Take a stroll or rent a bike to discover its peaceful tree-lined avenues, sparkling lake, and charming rose garden. For those in need of a bit of a workout (or breathtaking views), make your way up Cerro de la Gloria. This iconic hill offers panoramic vistas of the city and the Andes in the backdrop. It also houses the Monumento al Ejército de Los Andes, an impressive tribute to Argentina’s independence.
For families or relaxed travellers, grab a blanket and enjoy a picnic by the lake, or simply lounge under the shade of century-old trees. Oh, and if you’re visiting in the evening, keep an eye out for the occasional live music performances that make this place even more magical.
Enjoy Drinks on Arístides Villanueva
If there’s one street in Mendoza that screams good vibes only, it’s Arístides Villanueva. This lively avenue is the city’s nightlife mecca, packed with trendy bars and restaurants that spill out onto the sidewalks. Whether you’re in the mood for a refined glass of Mendoza’s famous Malbec or a refreshing pint of artisanal beer, you’ll find your liquid happiness here.
It’s also super common to sit and drink outside of the corner shops which sell beer, wine, spirits and snacks. They often put out tables and chairs, and even blankets and heaters.
Start your evening with a classic picada (think charcuterie boards but make it Argentine) at one of the wine bars, then let the night guide you. Remember, it’s pretty standard to start your dinner around 10 pm in Mendoza. So don’t go out too early and miss all of the fun.
The best part? The vibe on Arístides isn’t just about the drinks – it’s about the people. Locals and travellers mingle, music hums in the background, and there’s a contagious energy in the air that makes you feel right at home, even if you’ve just arrived. Head here on a Friday or Saturday night for the liveliest scene, but if you’re after a quieter evening, weekdays still have plenty of charm.
Go Wine Tasting (Most Popular Thing to Do in Mendoza)

Mendoza produces over 70% of all Argentinian wine, so enjoying what this region offers should be at the top of your list when exploring all the best things to do in Mendoza. I took a day trip, which visited three different wineries, exploring the different elements of the process, along with a fantastic tasting at each.
We booked this six-hour wine tour through Get Your Guide, however, I believe almost all day trips run on a very similar schedule. Our tour was in both Spanish and English, and lasted around six hours.
Throughout this tour we tried ten!! Yes, you read that right… ten different types of wine. So, be sure to have a hearty lunch before jumping in the minibus.
We were taught all about paring wine with foods (far beyond my basic knowledge of red wine with red meat). And one of my favourite parts of the day was learning just how delicious the combination of a fantastic deep red is with a delicious chocolate alfarjor. Absolutely incredible.
Honestly, I preferred my experience at Concho Y Toro in Santiago (I think that was down to our fantastic guide, Filipe). That being said, I would still 100% recommend a wine tour as one of the best things to do in Mendoza.
Try Boujie Olive Oil
When in Mendoza, it’s not just about the wine – olive oil deserves its moment to shine too! The region’s Mediterranean-like climate doesn’t just work wonders on the grapes; it’s also perfect for cultivating olives. And let me tell you, the olive oil here? Pure liquid gold.
Take a tour of one of the boutique olive oil farms, where you’ll not only learn about the meticulous process of producing high-quality oils but also get to indulge in a tasting that feels just as sophisticated as wine tasting.
Think rich, peppery flavours, buttery smoothness, and even infused varieties like lemon or rosemary.
And the experience doesn’t stop there. Many of these tours pair their olive oil with fresh-baked bread, tapenades, and even local Malbec wine, creating a foodie experience you won’t forget. Who knew olive oil could be this boujie? Trust me, once you’ve had a taste, you’ll never look at supermarket brands the same way again.
Eat Asado!
As mentioned, Mendoza was the first city in Argentina I visited. And therefore, it provided my first taste of Argentinian beef. Wow, it did not disappoint!
No trip to Mendoza is complete without indulging in Argentina’s culinary pride and joy: asado.
This isn’t just a meal – it’s a ritual, a celebration of good food, good company, and incredible flavours. Picture this: slabs of meat sizzling over an open flame, the smoky aroma wafting through the air, and a glass of Malbec in hand. Heaven, right?
Head to a traditional parrilla like Don Mario or Las Tinajas to experience the magic of expertly grilled cuts like bife de chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), and costillas (ribs). The key here is patience – asado is all about slow-cooking over charcoal or wood, ensuring every bite is tender, juicy, and bursting with flavour.
Visit the Hot Springs
Naturally heated pools surrounded by stunning mountain views – I don’t think it gets much more beautiful than Mendoza’s hot springs. Terman Cacheuta is the go-to spot for the perfect blend of relaxation and luxury whilst in Mendoza.
There are various pools with different temperatures, so you’ll be able to find one that suits you perfectly. They also offer a day pass which includes access to the steam rooms, hot springs and even a skin-rejuvenating mud bath.
If you’re travelling on a budget, there are some public hot springs nearby, where you can enjoy the same hot waters without breaking the bank. Either way, you will have a fantastic relaxing experience.
Indulge in Coffee and Wine Culture

Mendoza is excellent for two of my favourite drinks: coffee and wine.
Now, if you know anything about Argentinian culture, then you should not expect to be able to grab a coffee early. Early mornings simply do not exist in this country.
Most cafes slowly come to life around 10 am, but don’t be surprised that many won’t open their door before what we might class as lunchtime. I recommend kicking off your day with a perfect cup of cafe con leche at one of the many beautiful cafes in Mendoza.
Local favourites include Bröd and Vía Civit where you can also enjoy a delicious pastry alongside.
When the afternoon rolls around, shift gears to Mendoza’s true superstar: wine. The city is dotted with tasting rooms and urban wineries where you can sip on world-class Malbec, Torrontés, and blends that rival the best of Bordeaux. And, if you’ve already completed a tasting tour, you’ll be armed with your new found knowledge to ensure you make the best selections!
The best part? Coffee and wine are part of the rhythm of life here. Whether you’re soaking in the vibrant café culture or clinking glasses with new friends, these simple rituals are the perfect way to slow down and savour Mendoza’s charm.
